How to clean your BBQ

To get the best from your barbecue, you need to keep it in tip-top shape – and you’d be amazed how easy it is to clean your BBQ if you use the right techniques and tips. Here’s a quick guide.

  • Heat helps

Clean BBQ grills when they’re hot, as grease and food come off much more easily – or get it up to a very high heat burn off even stubborn food remnants.
  • Steam clean

With the BBQ grill still warm, cover it with water-soaked newspaper and close the lid for half an hour – when you come back it will have been steam-cleaned!
  • Empty it out

If you use charcoal, empty ash into a bucket as soon as it’s gone cold – if it gets damp, it’s much harder to clean out. Use damp kitchen roll to pick up the last bits.
  • Scrub it

A wire-bristled BBQ grill brush will get rid of remaining food particles, or you can use aluminium foil screwed up into a ball. Then clean the grill with hot soapy water.
  • Choose your grill cleaner

Try these DIY options: spray with a 50/50 white vinegar/water mix or pour a little beer over before scrubbing. Or rub half a cut onion onto a hot grill to remove gritty bits.
  • For a thorough clean…

A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water is ideal for a more intensive clean, and best applied using a piece of crumpled aluminium foil to scrub the BBQ grill.
  • Outside help

For the outside of BBQs, use soap and water then buff the metal with a dry cloth. If it’s stainless steel, use a specialist cleaning spray.
  • Keep it clean

Coat the grill with sunflower oil to stop food sticking to it, while a thin coat of mineral/baby oil on the outside and a cover protect your BBQ from the elements and keeps rust at bay.
